Learn more about data collection with our Data Collection DVD from our Lean Training System. It is a recorded webinar and has companion products such as the PowerPoint presentation used to create it and a study guide available as well.

Data collection, ironically, has a substantial ‘art’ in how it is done. Knowing how much data to collect, where to record it, and how to set up the data warehouse all affect the usefulness of the data. The skill to do those things comes with practice.

There is no better way to do that than practice. Find a mentor to coach you and review your data collection plans. He or she will be able to offer good insight into how to improve your data collection process.

  1. If you don’t have KPIs in place, get them established.
  2. Create a data collection plan for each of your metrics.
  3. Find a mentor who can help prevent costly errors.
  4. Use your data to create and resolve a countermeasure for a miss on your KPIs.
  5. Conduct a ‘post mortem’ on your data collection efforts.
  6. Identify other areas where data will help with decisions, and continue collecting data.
