An assembly line is simply a linked series of processes that add incremental value to a product. Workers at each point of the line do a specific task as the work passes by their location.
Many variations of the assembly line exist—moving lines, conveyor belts, indexed advancement, manually passing products along, and continuously moving lines.
The common element, though, is that an assembly line has flow in it. Products don’t sit in piles between stations. Once a piece of work starts at one end, it will progress continuously to the other end of the line.
