A3 Process

Last updated by Jeff Hajek on February 17, 2024

The A3 process is a methodology for getting to the root cause of a problem and addressing it in a way that will permanently eliminate it.

Following the A3 process entails a large amount of back-and-forth between managers and their teams. For that reason, the A3 process is well-matched to learning organizations—companies that constantly strive to get better. In short, the A3 process is as much a method of communication as it is a method of problem solving.

The A3 process will require a wide range of other problem-solving tools in supporting roles. You’ll need data analysis tools (i.e. flow charts, pareto charts, cause and effect diagrams) to figure out what is going on, and you’ll need Lean tools (standard work, kanban, setup reduction, 5S, etc.) to make the required changes that you identify in the analysis.
